In addition to licensing campgrounds, the Health Department's Environmental Health Program is also responsible for inspecting campgrounds and investigating reported campground sanitation complaints. 

Temporary Campground

A license from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is required to operate a campground in the State of Michigan. Additional information about applying for a temporary campground license, including the application and procedure, can be found on the DEQ website.

When applying for a temporary campground permit, please include

• a completed license application;
• the license fee payment;
• copies of contracts for services to be provided (portable privies, garbage); and
• a site plan showing the location and accessibility of the campsites, campground roads and facilities.

The DEQ application must be submitted, with the appropriate State fee (see table on application) and the $115 local fee, to the Muskegon County Health Department at least 14 days prior to the event. The application and fees can be mailed or dropped off (209 East Apple Avenue, Muskegon, MI 49442). Generally, a Sanitarian responds within one business day. The local municipality must also be informed of the intent to establish a temporary campground.
