The Muskegon County Health Department offers two food safety training opportunities: ServSafe® Training and a general Food Safety Class.
ServSafe®
ServSafe® is a nationally recognized certification program through the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation. Course curriculum includes:
- Starting out with food safety
- Ensuring proper personal hygiene
- Purchasing, receiving and storing
- Preparing, cooking and serving
- Cleaning and sanitizing

Food Safety Class
The food safety class is a general education program, not a certification program. It is designed to provide an overview of food safety practices and principles. The information presented focuses on the 5 risk factors for foodborne illness identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
- Improper holding temperatures
- Contaminated equipment
- Poor personal hygiene
- Inadequate cooking
- Food from unsafe sources
This class is provided to groups free of charge. To schedule a class, please call (231) 724-6025.
Please note: The food safety class does not meet any licensing requirements as required by the Michigan Food Code Law.
