Food Service Sanitation

Food Service Sanitation is an inspection and licensing program. Sanitarians work with food service establishments to protect public health by ensuring that food is safely prepared and served under sanitary conditions. This program provides plan reviews for building/remodeling, conducts inspections, issues licenses, and investigates sanitation and foodborne illness complaints. The health department also offers food safety training.

      

Types of food service establishments covered by this program include:

  • Restaurants, cafeterias, grills, cafes, delicatessens
  • Bars, brew pubs, taverns, or nightclubs
  • Rental halls, theaters, commissaries, catering kitchens
  • Donut shops, lunch counters, sandwich shops, soda fountains, coffee shops
  • Catering trucks
  • Temporary food service stands at a festival, event, or flea market
  • Vending machines
  • Special transitory food units
        

The Michigan Department of Agriculture is responsible for inspecting and licensing establishments such as retail stores, bakeries, butcher shops, produce markets, food warehouses and processing plants as well as State or county fair concessions.
