The Muskegon County Health Department offers HIV counseling and testing at no charge. Confidential counseling involves individual time with a certified test counselor who is a resource for information, risk assessment, risk reduction, prevention strategies and community resources as well as addressing individual concerns.
Testing can be done by blood sample or more commonly with the Orasure method. Orasure is an absorbent swab that is placed in the mouth between the cheek and gum for 3 minutes. HIV results are available in approximately 8 days and may be obtained by either phoning in for the results or by meeting with a counselor. All testing is confidential (with name) and can be done anonymously (no name) by choice. You must be age 13 or older or parental consent is required.
The health department also offers HIV prevention outreach to community groups. Certified HIV test counselors are available to provide HIV prevention information and to counsel and test for HIV. To schedule a presentation with optional testing, call (231) 724-1274.
