Shingles is a painful skin rash caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles is a reactivation of the VZV virus. Anyone who has had chickenpox can develop shingles. However shingles is more common in people 50 years old or older and people who have a suppressed immune system.
Vaccine Cost
Shingles vaccine is available for anyone 60 years old or older through the Immunization program. The fee for this vaccine, a single, one-time dose, is $161.00 ($146 for the dose, plus a $15 administration fee). Payment is expected at the time of service.
- Medicaid will pay for the cost of this vaccine. Therefore, if you have Medicaid, please schedule an appointment with your doctor or visit our office for this vaccine. The health department is able to bill Medicaid.
- Some Medicare Part D plans may partially cover the cost of this vaccine. Co-pays vary depending on the plan. Therefore, you should talk to your doctor about getting the vaccine. The health department is unable to bill Medicare.
- If you have health insurance, check with your insurance company to see if the vaccine is covered. You should talk to your doctor about getting this vaccine. The health department is unable to bill insurance companies.
- If you have no insurance or insurance that doesn't cover the shingles vaccine at all, you can visit our office. Occasionally, due to funding, we have a limited supply of this vaccine available at no charge, however you are still responsible for paying the $15 administration fee. Please call us at 724-1220 in advance to check availability.
