Pandemic influenza (flu) is a global outbreak caused by a new flu virus. Because it is new, the population will have no immunity against it. A pandemic flu may spread easily, possibly causing serious illness and death. Because so many people are at risk, significant consequences are likely.
Having many people ill at one time can be highly disruptive to daily life. Health care systems may be overloaded. Medical supplies may be limited. Economic and social disruptions may occur such as limitations on travel and suspension of public gatherings. Because of these potential risks, it’s important for communities to prepare.
Pandemic flu has occurred three times in the past century. The most serious was the 1918 pandemic which killed tens of millions of people worldwide. At the present time, the 2009 H1N1 ("swine flu") flu virus is causing a pandemic. In addition, scientists continue to watch the H5N1 ("avian flu") flu virus because of its potential to also cause a pandemic.
